Auditions for Players’ fall comedy set Oct. 3-4

Director Martin Beekman will hold auditions for the Clarksville Community Players’ fall adult comedy “Sylvia” at the Fine Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. Call backs if necessary will be held Sunday, Oct. 4.


Performances will be Nov. 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.

“Sylvia” is an adult romantic comedy that reflects the challenges people face in relationships, careers, and finding themselves. It’s a story about a man, woman and a dog “Sylvia” who they adopt and the comedy that ensues.

The play, by A.R. Gurney, premiered Off Broadway in 1995 and the cast included Sarah Jessica Parker in the memorable role of Sylvia. Director Beekman seeks to cast at least two men and two women in the full-length comedy and encourages all adults (ages 18-plus) interested in participating in the show or working behind the scenes in some capacity to please attend the auditions on Saturday, October 3.

The three principle characters are Greg, a middle aged, upper class New Yorker having somewhat of a mid-life crisis, his wife Kate, and a lab poodle-mix named Sylvia that Greg brings home from the park. Smaller roles include: Tom, a philosophical dog lover in the park; Phyllis, an old classmate of Kate’s; and Leslie, a marriage counselor whose therapy advice is based on the character being somewhat androgynous.

While the script indicates the “acting ages” of the characters are between 30 – 50 years old, that easily can encompass a wide variety of actual ages so ALL interested adults, minority actors and technicians are encouraged to come to the audition.
