Kids Kollege back again this summer
SoVaNow.com / April 25, 2013Parsons-Bruce Art Association is pleased to welcome members of Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG), a professional honorary society of women educators, as partners in implementing Kids Kollege this summer. Several members of this organization assisted us last year in supervising the classes and this year plan to assume the responsibility of co-coordinating the volunteers needed in the classrooms.
New and exciting classes as well as some old favorites will be scheduled for youngsters ages 4-12. During session one, July 8-12, Looney Toons and More taught by Margaret Covington will focus on creating and drawing cartoons. Covington who teaches in the Gifted and Talented program for the Halifax County School System states, “Drawing was a pleasure to me in my childhood and I think it was critical to my ability to perceive space, develop it on paper and expand my imagination.” She has taken numerous art classes which have allowed her to become endorsed in art education. As a teacher, Covington has often used art to stimulate and motivate her students. She remarked, “When I see enthusiasm and promise in a child wanting to learn how to draw, I know there is artistic talent to develop into what can become a lifelong pleasure and a vehicle for self- expression.”
Also during the first session, Dianne Holmes, a veteran of Kids Kollege, will be teaching a CSI class which promises to be a favorite of participants. Holmes who taught a computer class last year is changing hats and becoming an investigator this year. She assisted in creating and writing the curriculum that will be used in this class which focuses on collecting clues and using techniques to solve mysteries and survey crime scenes. Prior to her retirement, Holmes was employed in the Halifax County Public Schools as an instructor in gifted education.
During the second session, July 15-19, Daphne Smith who worked as a music instructor with the Halifax County Public Schools will teach a class for the 4-6 year olds. Participants will have the opportunity to express themselves by singing, dancing, and acting in a mini musical. Smith who currently teaches in the music program offered by the school system at the Prizery for 4 year olds has experience working with our youngest participants of Kids Kollege.
Ivania Chinchilla, a Spanish and Sign Language teacher employed by the school system, will give students an opportunity to explore and learn Sign Language and Spanish. The Sign language class offered during week two will focus on words and phrases taught through the use of innovative games and activities. Spanish will be available in week three, July 22-26. A mixture of songs, games, and puppets create the exciting atmosphere where children will become familiar with Hispanic celebrations, language and culture.
The Robotics, art, science, reading, theater and crafts classes will return this year with all of the teachers from last year participating in the program again this summer. We have added an additional class every session to appeal to a wider range of interests, and will hold all classes at the Prizery and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. The cost per class this year is $55, and registration is now under way. Please mail your check and registration form to Parsons-Bruce Art Association, P.O. Box 234, South Boston, Virginia. 24592. Registration forms can be found on the Parsons-Bruce website, in the local newspapers or at the Prizery.
