Prizery plans Summer Theatre Celebration
SoVaNow.com / April 11, 2013The Prizery’s fourth annual Summer Theatre Celebration is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Kicking off the season is Oliver!, the multi-Tony Award winning show based on Charles Dickens’ classic novel, Oliver Twist. It tells the story of the young orphan, Oliver, and his adventures on the streets of London and features such classic songs as Food, Glorious Food, Where is Love, and As Long As He Needs Me.
Next up for your summer entertainment is Red, White, and Broadway, a musical review that will feature some of the best known and most loved songs from Broadway mixed with patriotic favorites to help celebrate Independence Day.
Closing the summer season will be Legally Blonde, the upbeat, popular musical based on the novel and hit movie of the same name. It tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner. Along the way she realizes that her legal knowledge and unique view of the world can help others and she eventually defends a woman wrongly accused of murdering her husband, surpassing the expectations and limitations of her peers and professors.
Chris Jones, Prizery artistic director and stage director for Summer Theatre Celebration, along with Brad Bass, choreographer, and Jon Latane, music director have been very busy finding the talent needed to make all of these shows come to life. In early March they held a cattle call audition for local talent, listening to about seventy local thespians sing and deliver monologs, as well as putting them through their paces with a lively dance audition. Then, they traveled to Louisville, Ky., to attend the Southeastern Theatre Conference auditions. While there they heard hundreds of auditions and conducted dozens of interviews with hopeful professional actors all vying for summer theatre jobs around the country. After much thoughtful deliberation, the creative team has set the cast and rehearsals will soon be filling The Prizery with talented young performers as they rehearse to bring the region’s only professional summer theatre program to life.
