Red, White and Blue Patriotic concert
SoVaNow.com / July 02, 2012Patriotic music that swells your heart? Broadway show tunes to make your foot tap? Humorous songs that leave you chuckling? Inspirational ballads that move you? There’s something for everyone in The Prizery’s Red, White & Blue Patriotic Concert, which opens the day after the Fourth of July.
The Summer Theatre Celebration 2012 continues with three performances of exceptional music by the summer stock performers. The show will run July 5-7, Thursday and Friday nights at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., and audiences will be treated to a smorgasbord of musical treats.
First of all, everyone loves patriotic songs that remind us of how much we love our country. The singers will perform a delightful medley of tunes from World War II, and their version of “God Bless America” will bring tears to the eyes. Galyana Castillo, who just finished her role as the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, will sing “Another Kind of Hero,” a moving song that speaks of anyone who serves as a hero for another, while Texas native Scott Gaines will have everyone tapping his toes to “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”
Are lighthearted Broadway show tunes your “cup of tea”? Then the talented singers will make you very happy. Sarah Brackett (evil stepsister in Cinderella) will entertain you with Ado Annie’s “I Can’t Say No” from the musical Oklahoma, and Prince Charming himself, John Michael Chappell, sings the lighthearted song “Me,” from Beauty and the Beast. Adding to the laughter will be Cat Wheelehan’s rendition of “Adelaide’s Lament” from Guys and Dolls, and clearly, every audience member should leave delighted with the comedy element.
If you like more stirring songs, Rhode Island native Andy Hernandez’s voice will soar with “The Impossible Dream,” and Jocelyn Lonquist, everyone’s beloved Cinderella, will be singing from Sondheim’s musical, Sweeney Todd. Additionally, Tierney Cody (Cinderella’s evil stepmother) will also be singing from that show the more lighthearted “Beside the Sea.” Jacob Estes is prepared to move the crowds with everyone’s favorite tenor solo “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserable, and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Carousel is tapped as the singers prepare to inspire audiences with “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Add to those songs a little bit of the musical Hairspray (with some special local youth performers) and you can see why everyone can be pleased with the selections in Red, White & Blue.
But that’s not all! There are American folk tunes covered as well. Stage Manager Chris Baker will prove that he’s not just a competent organizer as he takes the stage in this production, singing the moving “Ten Thousand Miles Away,” and the entire group will move crowds with the beautiful “Shenandoah.”
Also demonstrating her ability to be multi-talented is props mistress and assistant stage manager Savannah Ketchum of Charlotte County. She will be tapping onstage during the evening and then quickly reassuming her backstage duties. Costume assistant Maranda Rossi will prove that she has a powerful voice with her performances of Porgy and Bess’s “Summertime” and a featured solo part in “God Bless America.”
Finally, if Sinatra tunes are up your alley, Jamel Booth from Georgia is ready to croon a few tunes to make you feel nostalgic for Old Blue Eyes.
Director Chris Jones is delighted with the talent of these young visitors from around the United States, and the talented performers are likewise delighted with the hospitality of the citizens of Halifax County. Galyana Castillo said, “The hospitality in this area has blown my mind!” And her sentiments have been echoed by performer after performer, extolling the graciousness of churches that have provided meals, total strangers’ generosity, and the kindness of new friends they have met in the community.
The Red, White & Blue concert only runs for three performances, and ticket are currently on sale at The Prizery, or they can be purchased by calling 572-8339 or by going online at http://www.prizery.com. Halifax County fell in love with these performers in Cinderella, but now these young people don tuxes and evening gowns and tap shoes to impress you in a different way.
Remember, in this show there is truly something for everyone. You just have to come find out for yourself. Seeing is believing!
