In 2005 Ralph Schneider, Project Manager for the South Hill Model Railroad Museum, returned from the Land Down Under after 11 years away from the town he called his second home.

Crutchfield to sign books June 21 at the Boydton Library

Local author and Chase City native Joanne Crutchfield will sign and sell copies of her book, It’ll All Come Out in the Wash: Growing Up Colored in Jim Crow’s South, from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, June 21 at the Southside Regional Library’s Boydton location, 316 Washington Street. This book is a vivid account not only of her negative experiences coming of age under Jim Crow laws but of the positive power that reading and storytelling provided during these trying times. This memoir is chock-full of nostalgia, situational humor, melancholy, loving family portraits, short stories, and philosophical musings.

Skydivers to fill skies during South Hills Picnic in the Park

Aerial Adventure Inc. will be providing skydivers for the July 2nd Picnic in the Park celebration at Parker Park in South Hill. Team members will pass out small flags and take pictures with children after the show. It is rumored that Uncle Sam and maybe even Elvis himself will jump into field two around 8:30 p.m. This is a first for Picnic in the Park and will add excitement to one of the busiest gatherings of the year. Last year more than 3,000 people gathered for the Independence Day weekend celebration in the park. Make plans now to join the 2010 crowd.

Rosemont Wine and Art festival June 19

Chandra and Steve Rose of Rosemont Winery were joined by Frank Malone, South Hill Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, in unveiling Rosemont's latest wine last week. Artist Maggie Chalifoux designed the bottle label for the second in the series called Lake Country Blush. Rosemont Winery will hold its second annual Wine and Art Festival on Saturday, June 19 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. with local artists and craftsmen on hand. There will be food, music, wine tastings, tours and more.
