The Colonial Center project in downtown South Hill is coming together nicely, as witnessed by the rehabilitation of the historic theater that lies at the heart of the facility. The town will soon embark on a fundraising campaign in which donors will have an opportunity to dedicate the theater’s 400 seats. Seats can be dedicated in the donors’ name or to the individual, family or organization of the donor’s choosing. The Colonial Theatre is expected to open later this year, likely by the fall, giving South Hill a premier facility for the performing arts. (Lisa Clary photos)

There are a lot of fun things to do at Occoneechee State Park in Mecklenburg County this Memorial Day weekend.

‘Driving Miss Daisy’ opens May 13 at Fine Arts Center

“Driving Miss Daisy” is a hugely popular play written by Alfred Uhry. When this tremendous play was written in 1987, it won that year’s Pulitzer Prize. It was very quickly adapted into a popular film in 1989, starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. The joyful plot of the play deals with the unusual relationship between an old Southern Jewish lady and her humble and rough African-American chauffeur over the span of 25 years.

Piano jazz artist to headline festival at Occoneechee

Pianist, professor, and Downbeat magazine award-winning composer Monika Herzig will energize Jazz by the Lake audiences with her acoustic jazz piano for the second year. Concerts at the Occoneechee State Park lakeside amphitheater will start at 4:30 p.m. and continue until dark Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16.

Just in time for summer, Caffe Peroni in Downtown South Boston is making, on-site, its own gelato. Gelato is sometimes known as Italian ice, but there’s nothing icy about these creamy, luscious concoctions except the temperature.

Music, art, pottery classes for kids at The Prizery

The Prizery arts center announces its lineup of summer classes for children and teens, which range from the purely artistic to the deliciously culinary. Classes will be held at The Prizery arts center. Morning classes will feature a break for a snack brought from home; The Prizery does not have vending machines.
