Amanda Lee Barksdale, Joseph O’Brien Ambrose are wed

The marriage ceremony of Amanda Lee Barksdale, daughter of Michael and Tracy Barksdale of South Boston, and Joseph O’Brien Ambrose, son of John and Kathy Ambrose of Scottsburg, was held on Saturday, July 7, at Winn’s Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. James Kopco officiating.

Amanda is the granddaughter of Bernice and Nancy Long of South Boston, and Joe and Margaret Barksdale, also of South Boston. Joey is the grandson of June P. Young of Virgilina and the late Merritt Young and Louise Woodburn of Richmond, and the late John E. Ambrose.

Music for the ceremony was presented by David Duffer, pianist. Mothers and grandmothers of the couple were seated to “Ave Maria” by Schubert, while the bridesmaids entered to Bach’s “Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” “Canon in D” by Pachelbel was chosen for the bride’s processional. Samantha Stewart sang “From This Moment” and Samantha, along with her father, James Stewart, sang “When I Said I Do” during the lighting of the unity candle.

Escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents, Amanda wore an ivory, strapless Sweetheart Beaded Lace Trumpet gown with a beaded, mid-length veil. She carried a hand-tied bouquet of coral and white gerbera daisies and baby’s breath.

Lee Lewis of Halifax served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Katie Mann of Fredericksburg, Katelyn Voorhees of Richmond, Holly Griffin of Virgilina, Mary Lantor of Halifax, Emily Seat of South Boston and Lauren Kluge of Halifax, all friends of the bride. Each wore short, strapless satin gowns, coral in color, and all carried hand-tied bouquets of coral, yellow and white gerbera daisies.

Joey wore a black tuxedo with an ivory vest and tie with a white gerbera daisy boutonniere. Joey’s father, John, served as his best man. Groomsmen were Joey’s brothers, John Ambrose Jr. of Aberdeen, Md., and James Ambrose of Virginia Beach, Amanda’s brother Matthew Barksdale of South Boston and Joey’s friends, Joey Slagle and Chris Lowery, both of Halifax and Ryan Roller of Scottsburg. Each wore black tuxedos with ivory vests and ties and boutonnieres of single a white gerbera daisy.

Kaylee Rayn Barksdale, niece of the bride, and May Ambrose, niece of the groom, served as flower girls. They each wore ivory, tea length taffeta dresses and carried baskets of ivory flower petals. Ringbearer was Master Parker Ambrose, nephew of the groom, and he wore a black tuxedo with ivory vest and tie.

Following the pronouncement of the couple, the “Wedding March” by Mendelssohn was played for the recessional.

For her daughter’s wedding, Tracy wore a light blue shimmer, knee length tiered dress. Joey’s mother, Kathy, wore a purple, knee length dress with a matching three quarter length sleeve jacket. They each wore wrist corsages of white roses and greenery trimmed in white satin.

Mistress of Ceremony was Beth Epperson of South Boston. Stephanie Bomar of Halifax was guest register attendant, while Anna Clowdis of Alton, cousin of the bride, was program attendant.

A reception followed at the Halifax Country Club. Beautifully decorated with tables of mason jars filled with hydrangea blooms and floating candles, while white paper lanterns filled the air, guests enjoyed a delicious barbecue with all the trimmings and a night filled with music and dancing, great fun and well-wishes for the newlyweds.

After a wonderful week on a Caribbean cruise, Amanda and Joey are at home in Scottsburg.


On Saturday, Nov. 5, Mr. and Mrs. John Ambrose, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barksdale and Mr. and Mrs. James Ambrose hosted an engagement party for Amanda and Joey in Scottsburg.

On Sunday, March 11, Lee Lewis and Emily Seat entertained Miss Barksdale with a miscellaneous shower at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Lewis and Lee.

On Sunday, April 15, Beth Epperson, Scottie Clowdis, Stephanie Waller and Mary Ann Reagan hosted a miscellaneous shower for the couple at the Cluster Springs Ruritan Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Mac McDannald entertained the couple, along with their friends and family, with a “Handy-Man” Shower for Joey on May 12.

On Sunday, June 3, the ladies of Winn’s Creek Baptist Church hosted a miscellaneous shower for the couple.

On June 30, Holly Griffin and Lauren Kluge hosted a “Stock-the-Bar” Party at the home of Holly Griffin and Justin Elliott.

Amanda and Joey were entertained with bachelorette and bachelor’s weekends on June 22-24 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Amanda’s bridesmaids were her guests, while Joey’s brothers celebrated with him.

John and Kathy Ambrose, parents of the groom, hosted the after-rehearsal dinner at their home in Scottsburg on July 6. Amanda and Joey honored members of their wedding party with gifts after dinner.
