HRHS offers Look Good ... Feel Better program / March 04, 2009
For women undergoing active treatment for cancer, a fun, uplifting hour of learning makeup tricks may be just the thing needed to brighten the day – and the future.
“Look Good…Feel Better” is a free class offered by Halifax Regional Health System, in partnership with some talented and skilled individuals who volunteer their time to help women undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments find a new look that works for them.
“The Look Good…Feel Better program is eight years old in our area,” states Gloria Jordan of Your Hair Place in Clarksville and one of the practitioners teaching the class. “It is a wonderful program sponsored by the American Cancer Society. During the class, participants are given – free of charge – a great makeup kit worth approximately $250. It is theirs to keep. The supplies are donated through a partnership with the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association and the National Cosmetology Association.”
During the class, which lasts from one to one and one-half hours, participants learn about skin care including the use of moisturizers and makeup. They learn how to add color and excitement to their face.
“We use a basic twelve step program,” Jordan states. “We start with cleansing tips and work through moisturizing and into the use of makeup. We also help participants deal with hair loss. We teach them about wigs and using scarves, turbans and hats and how to manage a fashionable look even during active cancer treatments. The women who have participated in the class leave feeling like new. They have learned tips that will help them not only right then, but also in the future.”
Others facilitators of the Look Good … Feel Better class include Ann Rogers and Misty Jordan, also from Your Hair Place, Diane Watts from New Image Hair Design in South Boston and Renee Overbey from Reflections Salon in Clarksville.
Sessions are held at either Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston or at MeadowView Terrace in Clarksville. Advance registration is required.
“We require advance registration because we need to know the skin tone of each participant,” Jordan says. “Our makeup kits come in either light, medium, dark or extra dark and we want to make sure we have the proper shade available for each person. We have no set schedule for the classes. We will set one up whenever someone needs it.”
