RED CROSS RECEPTION DEC. 15
The American Red Cross, Virginia Capital Region will be hosting a reception on December 15, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Chastain Home, 370 Mountain Road Halifax. SONS OF AMERICAN REVOLUTIONS MEETS DEC. 17

AARP #4327 MEETS DEC. 20
AARP South Boston-Halifax County Chapter #4327 meets Tuesday, December 20, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church. A musical program will be presented by Bill Stillman and Donnie Harding and new officers will be installed. Lunch served for a fee. Bring food items/donations for Good Samaritan.

DAN RIVER RURITAN CLUB FRUITCAKE SALE UNDERWAY

MASTER GARDENER COURSE APPLICATIONS
The Virginia Cooperative Extension office is now taking applications for the Master Gardener Course which starts on January 10, 2012. The Master Gardener Program is a two-part educational effort, in which avid gardeners are provided many hours of intense home horticulture training, and in return they "pay back" the local Halifax Extension Office through volunteerism. Master Gardeners assist with garden lectures, exhibits, demonstrations, school and community gardening, phone diagnostic service, research, and many other projects. Classes are from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon every Tuesday for sixteen consecutive weeks. This is a great opportunity for novice or experienced gardeners and landowners to learn more and to give back to their community through education.

AMERICAN LEGION AUX. UNIT 8 NO MEETINGS IN DECEMBER

DIVORCE SUPPORT GROUP MEETS SECOND/FOURTH THURSDAYS
If you are alone because of divorce or separation and need help through this difficult time, there is help for you. There is a group of divorced and separated persons who meet at Main Street United Methodist Church every second and fourth Thursday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. All discussions at these meetings are confidential. AL-ANON MEETS EVERY THURSDAY

LOCAL LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM
If you are a resident of a long-term care facility (nursing home or assisted living facility) in the counties of Mecklenburg, Halifax or Brunswick and have a complaint, question, or concern that has not been answered to your satisfaction, there is a resource you can call. The ombudsman at Lake Country Area Agency on Aging, Linda Gage, assists and advocates for residents in these counties. You can reach her at (434)447-7661 or 1-800-252-4464, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The local ombudsman protects and represents the rights of persons in nursing homes and adult care residences or those receiving home and community based long-term care. She acts as a resource for information and counseling for issues regarding institution or home-based options for the elderly as well as general issues and concerns by them or their families. The local long-term care ombudsman also seeks to educate consumers of long-term care facilities and their families about their rights and seeks to empower them to find answers to their concerns.
