‘Perfect storm’ delivers shock, surprise

County jobless rate falls in March

Two hundred and nineteen more people found employment in Halifax County during the month of March than during the month of February, thus dropping the County’s jobless rate by six-tenths of a percentage point. The unemployment rate fell from the February rate of 12.2 percent to 11.6 percent in March as 1,939 residents of the County’s 16,683 member civilian labor force looked for work as compared to the 2,012 job seekers in February.

Attempted murder charged

Two County men have been charged with the attempted first degree murder of Donald Canada, Jr. of 1027 Meaville Trail, Halifax. Charged with the crime on Thursday, April 30 was 28 year old Bryant Tamark Henderson of 2156 Bethel Road, Halifax, who was also with conspiracy to commit first degree murder of Canada. Also charged with attempted first degree murder was Daries Lamont Coles, 20, of 1078 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg.

Hospitals: We’re ready for swine flu

Local health providers say they are prepared for a possible outbreak of swine flu in Virginia as cases continue to surface across the U.S. and the world. At least 152 people have died of a virulent strain of the flu in Mexico, and while cases in the United States have been much milder public health professionals say they’re taking no chances. In Virginia, Gov. Tim Kaine on Tuesday declared a public health emergency, and local providers are bracing for the possible spread of the disease — although they stress that people should not allow their fears to get the best of them.
