Close but no Apple: Southside falls just short of a big prize

The plum prize in question is Apple Computer, which announced earlier this month it would build a $1 billion data warehouse in North Carolina. The Tar Heel State won the coveted project with the help of a tax incentive package estimated to be worth $46 million over the next decade. If Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple stays in North Carolina for 30 years, the value of the tax breaks could balloon to $300 million, according to lawmakers.

30 arrested in sweep, face drug, gang-related charges

Local, state and federal police officers arrested 30 individuals Thursday in a sweeping local drug investigation and charged them with 156 counts ranging from distribution of cocaine to gang participation. The arrests followed a mass operation which resulted from an ongoing investigation conducted by the Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotics and Gang Task Force. The task force is a collaborative effort between US Marshals, Virginia State Police, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, the South Boston Police Department, the Prince Edward, Charlotte and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Offices, the Farmville Police Department and the Department of Corrections. Twenty of the individuals arrested have a South Boston address, while three are from Alton and three from Halifax County. Two defendants have a Clover address and one each are from Virgilina and Sutherlin.
