Missing Garner, N.C. man found dead in Bracey

The body of Thomas Earl Finch was located around 5:00 p.m. June 21 near Highway 903 in Bracey. He was last seen on Friday, June 16 at the Lake Gaston Inn in Bracey.

Dropout rate among state’s lowest

Halifax County High School is one of 94 high schools out of 313 in the state to have a dropout rate of less than five percent. On Tuesday the Virginia Department of Education released a report showing that Halifax County’s dropout rate stands at only 4.9 percent. The figures were derived from tracking 432 students who entered the ninth grade in 2004-05. “We were very pleased with the report,” said Joe Griles, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for Halifax public schools. Griles was quick to add that the local school system has worked very hard at reducing its dropout rate, and he credited several initiatives for the success in cutting the local rate.

Supervisors okay $91.7 mil budget

Halifax County Supervisors on Monday night approved a $91,752, 414 budget for FY 2009-2010. That is $6,027,730 less than the current year’s budget, a six percent reduction. Supervisors unanimously approved the budget after working on the package for the past month. Tax rates will remain the same as this year with real estate taxed at 44 cents per $100 value; personal property at $3.60 per $100 value; machinery and tools at $1.26.

Council to get first budget look at budget

South Boston Town Council will get its first look at the 2009-10 budget during their upcoming April 6 council meeting. Town Manager Ted Daniel told Council members Monday night during their regular work session that the draft budget is nearly completed and should be ready for the upcoming meeting.
