Halifax County schools pare budget requests to $1.1 mil

Responding to a plan to add only $159,000 in local funding to the Halifax County school budget, school officials have pared back their lists of needs to $1.1 million — roughly half what trustees originally asked for.

Old Men and Boys battle to be commemorated

The Historic Staunton River Foundation in conjunction with the Halifax Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will host a Commemoration of the Battle of Staunton River Bridge with a weekend full of activities beginning Friday night, June 19, and the revelry will continue with daylong events on Saturday, June 20 at the Staunton River Battlefield State Park.

Search for Brown goes nationwide

As state and local law enforcement continue their extensive search efforts for a missing Halifax County woman, Virginia State Police have disseminated nationwide a “Missing Person” poster. The poster, which features a physical description of Hattie Gertrude Brown and photograph of an example of her missing vehicle, was sent to law enforcement nationwide this past weekend.

Raising awareness of Special Olympics

RUNNING THE TORCH RUN — Local law enforcment officers yesterday morning were running through the towns of South Boston and Halifax to raise awareness for Special Olympics Programs. Anderson Lawn Care provided the shirts, while FoodLion of Centerville gave participants ice and water. Wal-Mart made a special $1,000 donation to the project. Taking part in the run were officers from the Halifax County Sheriff's Department, the South Boston Police Department, the Halifax Police Department and the Virginia State Police.
