The Halifax Police Department has received complaints regarding a sweepstakes letter that residents are receiving in the mail from at&t Financial Services Consumer Protection Department. After investigating the matter, the Halifax Police Department has determined the enclosed check is invalid and the sweepstakes is a scam originating in Alberta, Canada.

‘Meadows & Taylor’ to perform at Trinity

Trinity Episcopal Church cordially invites the public to come and enjoy a performance by the wonderful acoustic duo Meadows & Taylor on Friday, Oct. 9 from 7-8 p.m. As part of a community outreach program, the church has been opening not only its doors but its richly acoustic sanctuary as well to showcase a variety of musical talents, including those of its own members.

Little gain in jobs report

Defying the trend statewide, Halifax County’s jobless rate remained stubbornly high in August, a further sign that economic recovery elsewhere has not filtered down to the local level. The Virginia Employment Commission reported yesterday that unemployment in Halifax County stood at 12.6 percent in August, barely budging from the July rate of 12.7 percent. For Virginia as a whole, unemployment fell from 6.9 percent in July to 6.5 percent in August, giving the state the fifth-lowest jobless rate in the nation.
