UPDATE: An 11-year-old African American male who had gone missing in the Alton area Thursday morning has been found.

New county administrator named

Halifax County Board of Supervisors chairman William Fitzgerald welcomes George Nester as the county's new administrator. Nester was named to the post during Monday night's meeting. Nester cojmes to Halifax County from Bedford County where he was the community development director. Nester will begin his duties as the new county administrator on May 18.
Halifax County will have a new county administrator beginning May 18. On Monday night Supervisors announced they have hired George W. Nester to fill the post following the resignation in December of County Administrator Bryan Foster. Nester’s salary was set at $125,000 per year plus the same benefit package that other county employees receive.

Wilson Memorial Ruritans get old school property

The Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club was given the former Wilson Memorial Elementary School property Monday night by the Halifax County Board of Supervisors. The club plans to transform the former school into a community center. Included in the donation was all but two acres of the school property, which will be used by the county for the creation of another convenience center. Jean Goodman, president of the Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club and Board of Supervisors chairman William Fitzgerald are joined by members of the club at Monday night's meeting.
The Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club was the big winner on Monday night as County Supervisors moved to donate the former Wilson Memorial School, along with some 15.5 acres of land to the Club. Their approval of the donation followed Club President Jean Goodman’s comments in which she said the Club “hopes to do a lot for our young people,” as well as including activities for the entire community.

MRSA case reported at HCHS

Halifax County has a second case of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) school officials reported today (Monday). Deputy School Superintendent Larry Clark said a male high school student has been diagnosed with the disease. Parents of high school students were notified on Monday of the report of the second case to be diagnosed within the past several days.
