UPDATE: An 11-year-old African American male who had gone missing in the Alton area Thursday morning has been found.

Trustees plan budget vote

Halifax school trustees are expected to vote Thursday, on a proposed $63,007,330 school budget for FY 2009-2010. That sum is $931,598 less than the current year’s $63,938,928 school budget. The trustees’ meeting begins at 7 p.m. and citizens in attendance will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed budget prior to the board’s vote on it. The reductions in the budget come from a $305,157 cut in instructional costs, an $85,487 cut in administration and clerical personnel and a $454,697 reduction in transportation costs. Operational and maintenance services costs were cut by $78,634 with debt service reduced by $7,546.

Meadville student diagnosed with MRSA

A fourth grade student at Meadville Elementary School has been diagnosed with MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), school officials said Friday. According to Deputy Superintendent of Schools Larry Clark, the Central Office was notified of the case late Friday afternoon by the schools’ nurse manager after all students and teachers had left for the day.

Supes host public hearing

Halifax County Supervisors will host four public hearings beginning at 6:30 p.m. this evening in the second floor meeting room of the Mary Bethune Complex during their regular monthly meeting. The first of those hearings deals with a request for a conditional use permit in ED4 from Robert B. Cheatham to allow him to operate an internet gaming cafe on the west side of Route 501, some 300 feet north of Greens Folly Road in the Centerville area.
