12-year-old struck by car Friday

SoVaNow.com / October 11, 2010
A 12 year old youth was struck by a passing motorist at 2:42 p.m. on Friday afternoon on Route 621 (Chisholm Trail) abut one tenth mile west of Route 642, in the Nathalie area.

Jeremiah Pena, who is a sixth grader at Halifax County Middle School, reportedly dashed across the road from a private driveway and was struck by the 1994 Chevrolet Corsica operated by 19 year old Demetric Shawn Jones of Nathalie.

According to a report filed by Virginia State Trooper J.R. Abbott, the accident occurred on a straight stretch of the roadway which had a speed limit of 55 mph, but he estimated that Jones was only doing about 50 mph. He noted that the private driveway, which was on the left, was surrounded by trees and bushes and obscured Jones' vision as the youth crossed the road.

Neither Jones nor any of the three passengers in his car were injured in the mishap. Damages to his car were estimated at $800.

Pena was airlifted to Carillon Hospital in Roanoke where he was suffering from a broken leg, a broken hip and some swelling in the brain. He was listed in critical condition, but reportedly was showing improvement yesterday.
