Art to make appearance at HRH, artists on hand also
SoVaNow.com / April 22, 2013Soon to be exhibited at Halifax Regional Hospital are the works of a very talented group of Halifax County High School art and woodworking students. The community is invited to celebrate them and their works at a reception on Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m. in Leggett Auditorium.
Given the themes of courage, faith and hope, the art students of Carolyn Egan and Krista Skelton embraced the opportunity to create pieces that will make a difference in the lives of those who view it. And, since these works require frames, Warren Penick’s woodworking students were invited to put their skills to use. The joint efforts of these two groups of young people will soon be found in several locations throughout the hospital including the entrance to the ICU/Surgery Family Room, the Chapel and the rear entrance adjacent to Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.
The brainchild of the hospital’s Planetree Architecture and Interior Design component team chaired by Calvin Williams, radiology, and Vance Midgett, pastoral and guest services, the project served as a way to utilize community resources within the halls of of the hospital.
“Very few individuals can step into a hospital without becoming emotional,” states Midgett. “Research has shown the art work can do beneficial things to the human body such as lowering blood pressure and reducing stress. And because our health system vision and values focus on corporate citizenship, who better to partner with than our local high school in a project such as this.”
The driving force behind the project was Radiology Tech Gary Guthrie who served as the liaison between the students and the hospital, and has been extremely impressed with the efforts of all those involved in the project.
“The thing I have found most impressive is the fact the students were offered a task, accepted the responsibility, accomplished the task and ended up creating twenty-six wonderful pieces of framed art and did an outstanding job with it,” Guthrie says. “I think the staff of the hospital, visitors, patients and the community in general will be amazed at the efforts of both of these groups of students.”
Those interested in attending the reception celebrating the project are asked to RSVP by calling 434.517.3094 or by registering online at http://www.hrhs.org.
Light refreshments will be served and the students and their families and teachers will be on hand. 265
