Authorities launch aerial drug sweep of region

South Boston News / August 02, 2017
A joint law enforcement task force descended on the Lake Country Airport in Clarksville last week for a regional drug sweep known as GIANT – Government Initiative Against Narcotic Trafficking.

It is a collaborative effort involving several state agencies including Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia National Guard and North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation.

Corinne Geller with the Virginia State Police said these sweeps are conducted all over the state. This is the beginning of harvest period for those growing marijuana, which is why officers generally conduct their sweep this time of year.

Their marijuana interdiction efforts utilize both air and ground searches, and are generally based on tips received, Geller explained..

In North Carolina more than 800 plants were seized in Granville, Vance, and Warren counties. Officers also recovered two stolen vehicles. In Virginia an additional 25 plants and 20 illegal firearms were seized in Mecklenburg County.
