SoVaNow.com / June 13, 2013Has the town of Halifax become a speed trap?
Some town council members this week said that’s what they’d been asked. But, they agreed, there are worse things to be known for.
“Like the murder rate, accidents or fatalities,” said Police Chief Kevin Lands, who has been on the job since December.
Lands’ monthly report at Council’s June meeting showed that traffic summonses had risen to 74 in May, three times more than Lands’ first month. He attributed the rise to one officer returning from family leave, plus officers’ good morale.
The figure includes tickets for speeding, reckless driving and other violations.
“It’s not excessive,” said Council member Bill Confroy. “In fact, it could be more.”
Lands also reported to Council that renovations in his department’s offices are complete, that the department had been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Chastain Foundation ($4,000 more than last year) and that his officers are pleased to be included in Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark’s near-monthly school drug searches.
CommentsPretty sure our friendly Commonwealth has statutes defining how much percentage of town revenue can come from traffic fines. Long as Houston stays below that threshold, they'll be fine.
Seems that the chief of police and Mr. Confroy did a lot of doublespeak when the question was posed. Or do they possibly wish to be like New Rome Ohio? where the police and village govamint ran amok until the State of Ohio shut them down.
Do Mr. Lands and Mr.Confroy _really_ want Halifax to end up on _this_ list? That would surely not be good for bizness.
