Baskerville man dies in crash / April 21, 2010
When two cars, both traveling down the middle of a two-lane road, collided at the crest of hill Sunday evening, one driver died and the other suffered serious injuries.

The accident occurred about 7 p.m. on Baskerville Road about a mile south of U.S. 58, according to Virginia State Police.

Hermilo Avilez, 22 was pronounced dead at the scene. Justin Brigman, 28, was transported by MedFlight to VCU hospital in Richmond.

Both victims were Baskerville residents.

Rosser Wells, chief of the South Hill Fire Department, said firefighters prepared a landing site for the helicopter in an adjacent field and worked with Southside Rescue to extricate the victims from the wreck.

He said the road was closed for 4 hours while Virginia Department of Highways workers cleared the wreckage.

Both the 1997 Honda Civic that Avilez was driving and the 2008 Dodge Charger that Brigman was driving were completely destroyed, according to the state police report.
