Boaters thrown overboard, rescued / June 24, 2020
Two boaters were thrown overboard after their vessel hit a log in Buggs Island Lake late Monday afternoon.

Clarksville Fire Chief Johnny Shriver said the two individuals, a man and a woman, were uninjured and quickly plucked from the water by a passing pontoon boat operator who heard their cries for help.

Before the mishap, the couple had been enjoying an afternoon on the lake, after having put their boat in the water at Staunton River State Park boat ramp.

Shriver said the rescue effort was made especially tricky because the 70 HP engine on the couple’s powerboat was locked in full throttle and doing right-hand circles in the water between the bypass and the downtown bridges near Clarksville.

Shriver said it took firefighters about 15 minutes before they were able to hook the gas line and dislodge it from the engine to cut the power. They later towed the boat to shore.

Aside from the broken gas line, Shriver said it did not appear as if the boat sustained any damage.

The couple was also unharmed, though a little shaken up from the experience.
