Brodnax man arrested for Murlo embezzlement
SoVaNow.com / September 12, 2012An employee of LaCrosse’s Murlo Paper and Plastics, Inc. stands accused of embezzlement, according to Mecklenburg Sheriff Bobby Hawkins.
Sixty-two year old Riggie Clay of Brodnax was arrested August 23. He faces 30 counts of embezzlement. Hawkins said Clay allegedly took an undisclosed amount of money from his employer, Murlo Paper and Plastics, Inc.
In November 2001, Murlo owner David Goad asked the Sheriff’s Office to look into losses his company experienced over a three-year period beginning in 2009. Sergeant Mark Claiborne began looking into Goad’s claim, working with the office of Commonwealth’s Attorney Nora Miller. They wrapped up the investigation in June and presented their case to the grand jury during its August term.
If convicted, Clay faces a possible prison sentence of between one and twenty years for each count.
Clay is free on a personal recognizance bond pending the trial. No trial date has been set at this time.
