Buffalo Junction man dies in Wednesday crash

SoVaNow.com / October 07, 2019
A single vehicle crash in the westbound lane of U.S. 58 on Wednesday claimed the life of Buffalo Junction man who was ejected from the pickup truck after it rolled over into the median strip of the highway.

Danny A. Stanley Jr., 26, was the driver who died in the crash. According to Virginia State Police, Stanley approached a VDOT work vehicle too quickly when the wreck happened, near Ramble Road in eastern Halifax County on Wednesday afternoon.

A passenger in the vehicle, 19-year-old Michael Thomas Martin of Skipwith, was also ejected from the vehicle. As of Friday, Martin was still in critical condition at the Duke Hospital Intensive Care Unit in Durham, N.C.

Both passengers of the vehicle were airlifted to Duke. Stanley died of his injuries while undergoing emergency surgery.

At the time of the crash, VDOT crews were working on the road and using the large sign with a flashing arrow to direct drivers to change lanes. According to State Trooper J.A. Wilmoth, “the VDOT workers saw the entire scene.” No one working on the VDOT crew was injured.

VDOT crew members were able to describe the circumstances of the wreck to Wilmoth.

Stanley swerved right to miss the VDOT truck, but overcorrected his vehicle, according to witness accounts. His vehicle started sliding sideways before rolling over at least two times when it hit the dirt in the median. It finally came to rest on its roof in the east bound lanes of U.S. 58.
