One person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a head-on crash in Lunenburg County Saturday afternoon.

The collision happened at 2:15 p.m. on State Route 49, about a mile and a half south of Ontario Road near Lunenburg Courthouse.

A 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Jesse L. Gillespie, 23, of Buffalo Junction was traveling south on Route 49 when it crossed the center line into the northbound lane and struck head-on a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Diane Garrett, 63, of Chase City, according to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller.

Garrett and an unnamed front seat passenger in the Equinox were life-flighted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond for treatment of serious injuries. The back seat passenger in the Equinox, Grace A. Ferrell, 69, of Buffalo Junction was declared dead at the scene.

Gillespie was transported by ambulance to VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill for treatment of minor injuries.

Geller said Senior Trooper J.J. Kempo is still investigating the crash and charges are pending.
