Citizens outreach group registers new voters

SoVaNow.com / July 30, 2020

A new group, Citizens Registering Citizens, is pounding the pavement to get more people registered to vote or restore their voting rights following their release from incarceration.

Today, they will be at the Rosehill Apartments focusing on the senior population and the option of voting by absentee ballot. On Saturday, the group will be helping to register more voters from 7 a.m.-noon during a massive yard sale at the TJM Community Center in Cluster Springs.

“We try to find a location with a large gathering,” said Mattie Cowan, who added the group has registered 100 prospective voters so far.

There are two more events in the works — one will be held at Edmunds Park on Sept. 8 and another at Westside Village. Anyone interested in helping to register new voters is welcome to join the group. Members are listed below along with a contact number.

Members of Citizens Registering Citizens are Jacqueline Bailey, Betty Majors, Thomas Majors, Sandra Coleman, Taquan Logan, Eugene Turbeville, Barbara Coleman-Brown, Nevaeh Hodges, Shanetta Crews-Hodges, Ellen Kent, Rev. Anthony Womack, Marva Womack, Arlene Dailey, Hazel Boyd, Doreena Dixon, Tracey Teagan, Mary Pannell and Mattie Cowan.

Anyone who needs to register or wants to restore their voting rights can text 434-222-5512 and leave a name and contact number.

There are two key dates to keep mind with the General Election on Nov. 3. Early voting begins Friday, Sept. 18, and the last day to register is Thursday, Oct. 15.
