Clarksville man arrested for arson, more charges likely / November 08, 2017
A Clarksville man suspected of arson was arrested Thursday in connection with a fire at a home in Merifield Acres near Clarksville.

Clarksville Police Sgt. Tim Garner, working with Investigator Jason Seamans with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, picked up Daniel Watson Barden, 58, of Shiney Rock Road, Clarksville early Thursday afternoon as he was driving through Clarksville.

Garner said Barden was taken into custody without incident and transported to Meherrin River Regional Jail. He was charged with arson, but Garner said more charges are pending.

Barden is suspected of setting fire to a home on Ridge Road during the overnight hours of Tuesday, Oct. 4. No one was injured as a result of the incident, though flames from the fire melted the siding near the garage entrance.

He is also the prime suspect in a vandalism incident involving Sue’s Place, a gift and collectibles shop on College Street in Clarksville. On the same night as the arson, vandals broke in and destroyed nearly every item in the shop, caused the building to flood, sprayed foam insulation on the walls and floors throughout the building and sprayed obscenities on the outside of the building in red paint.

The person whose home was burned in Merifield Acres also owns the shop near Clarksville.

In an unrelated incident on Oct. 9, Barden was arrested in Danville charged with defrauding a hotel/motel of less than $200 and public swearing /intoxication. His arraignment in that case is set for Monday.
