Clover man gets 10 years for home entry

SoVaNow.com / June 10, 2019
A Clover man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a June 2018 home invasion in the county.

Michael Lee Cousins, 38, was in court Thursday to receive his punishment on four charges: grand larceny, selling stolen property, entering a house to commit assault and battery and driving on a revoked license.

He pleaded guilty in April to each of the offenses.

On Thursday, Halifax Circuit Judge Kim White sentenced Cousins to 50 years and 20 days behind bars on all four charges, but suspended all time other than the 10-year active sentence for the home invasion.

The crimes took place on June 19, 2018.

In addition to serving 10 years in prison, Cousins will be required to complete two years of supervised probation upon his release and remain on good behavior for 40 years.

He was also ordered by the judge to have no contact with the victim or his family.

Also Thursday in Circuit Court, Alexander Howard Payne received an active one-year, six-month prison sentence for making a bomb or burn threat against a county woman and resisting arrest.

His total sentence was 11 years, with most of that time suspended on the condition of Payne undergoing mental health and substance abuse treatment after his release from jail.

He pleaded guilty to the charges as part of a plea agreement with the prosecution.
