Comets wins Region 4D title, advance to state finals

South Boston News
The Comets celebrate their Region 4D championship victory at Blacksburg / February 14, 2021
Comet basketball was in its full glory Sunday in Blacksburg as the varsity boys advanced to the VHSL Class 4 state tournament for the third straight year with a powerful 54-48 win over the Blacksburg Bruins.

The Comets were led on the scoreboard by sophomore Kam Roberts who finished with a game-high 16 points. Jayden Waller added nine and Davon Jennings seven.

But there was no denying that senior teammate Kevon Ferrell, who posted 13 points, was a driving force the entire game. Add in the fact that the refs allowed the physicality one would expect with two elite teams facing off for a region championship and a berth in the state tournament, and the Comets got the best of the 4D matchup.

Halifax came out and played well in the first period, moving out to the 7-5 lead. With the score knotted 7-7, Jennings got a deuce for a 9-7 lead. Blacksburg got a point from the stripe to end the frame 9-8, Halifax.

The Bruins opened the second period with a 7-2 run to go up 15-11. But a trey by Ferrell and a basket by Roberts off some nice defense pushed the Comets back in front, 16-15.

Blacksburg immediately retook a one-point lead. Baskets by Waller, Roberts and Ferrell took Halifax to halftime leading 24-23.

Ferrell opened the second half with five quick points off a three-pointer and a hard move on the zone defense of the Bruins, extending the Comets’ lead to 29-23.

Blacksburg pulled back to within two at 29-27, but Roberts drained a trey and kept the Comets ahead, 32-29.

The Comets took their biggest lead in the game at 38-31 on a layup by Keshawn Wells. The third period ended with HCHS ahead, 38-34.

The Comets went cold to start the final period. But with approximately 3:40 remaining in regulation, Roberts buried the deuce.

The Bruins scored on an ensuing possession to cut the Comet lead to 50-48. But that’s as close as it got as Halifax closed in dramatic fashion, sealing the six-point 54-48 victory.

According to the VHSL’s Class 4 state championship brackets, Halifax will host the semifinal opponent John Handley, the Region 4C champion Wednesday at 6 p.m. If Halifax wins the semifinal, they will host the winner of the Smithfield (Region 4A Champion) vs. Eastern View (Region 4B Champion) in the state championship game at Blue Heaven.

Unofficial scoring totals have Kameron Roberts with 16 points, Kevon Ferrell 13, Davon Jennings 7, Jaden Waller 9, Nasir Word 5, Keshawn Wells 4.
