Cosby takes oath as new clerk of court
SoVaNow.com / January 06, 2014
Halifax County’s new Clerk of Court was sworn in Friday afternoon, with Cathy Cosby taking over the position after having served as Deputy Clerk for the past 35 years.
Cosby succeeds her old boss, Bobby Conner, who retired after holding the post for many years.
Halifax County Circuit Court Judge Joel Cunningham administered the oath of office to Cosby as she was surrounded by a large gathering of family members, co-workers and friends. Cunningham noted that he and Cosby both started their careers at the court in 1978.
“I am confident that Cathy will do a good job in serving the public in this position,” Cunningham told audience members gathered for the occasion.
Cosby will serve as clerk until a special election can be held for the office. She said Friday that she will be a candidate in the special election.
In a prepared statement, Cosby said, “I am very fortunate to have served under two clerks, Robert “Bobby” Conner and the late Julian Sizemore.
“I have always enjoyed my job at the Clerk’s Office and I am well qualified to serve as Circuit Court Clerk. It is a job I love and take very seriously. I am capable of performing all of its duties and responsibilities. I look forward to using my years of service along with my experience to further improve the services provided by the Clerk’s Office.
“I am grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to serve our judicial system, the citizens of Halifax County and the public. Along with the staff, it will be our goal to serve you by providing excellent customer service and knowledge of the legal system. I am committed to enhancing the services provided and the needs of the customer. I will practice an open door policy at all times in order to address any concerns and recommendations from the public.
“I am a lifetime resident of Halifax County, which I dearly love. I am married to Alvin Cosby Jr. and we reside in Vernon Hill. We have two wonderful children, Dabney Cosby and Mary Beth Cosby Skipworth and two beautiful grandchildren, Dylan Puryear and Brooklyn Skipworth. I am the daughter of Velora Moore and the late Willis “Doc” Moore.
“I ask the citizens of Halifax County for their prayers and support as I look forward to serving each of you as Circuit Court Clerk at the beginning of January and also as a candidate for this position in the election.”
A date has yet to be set for the special election.
