A Halifax County High School graduate suffered spinal injuries in a Tuesday afternoon crash on Love Shop Road but is expected to make a speedy recovery without having to undergo surgery, according to his mother.

Zyon Wilson, a member of the Class of 2020, was returning home after picking up his graduation packet for the drive-thru commencement event Saturday morning at the school. Driving north on Love Shop Road, his 2009 Toyota Camry skidded off the road and ended up in an embankment.

The badly-crumpled Camry was totaled and the injured youth was taken by ambulance to Duke Medical Center as a precaution. His mother, Kristy Tucker, said Zyon suffers from a compressed vertebrae fracture and is wearing a brace.

She expressed relief the crash was not any worse. “The doctors feel that he will have a speedy recovery, with no surgery needed as of now. Plus he will still be able to play football,” she said.

Wet road conditions were a factor in the crash, said Virginia State Trooper Buzetta. She is not filing any charges and said Wilson was observing the speed limit when the crash happened. “He was probably going too fast for the weather,” she said.
