Cunningham to receive Cora Tucker service award at Jubilee Day Jan. 1

SoVaNow.com / December 27, 2012
The Halifax/South Boston branch of the NAACP will hold its annual Jubilee Day Celebration on Jan. 1, at Banister Hill Baptist Church, Halifax, beginning at 11 a.m.

This year’s guest speaker will be outgoing president, the Rev. Kevin L. Chandler, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, South Boston and music will be by HYM.

The annual Cora Tucker Community Service Award will be presented this year to Circuit Court Judge Joel Cunningham. In addition, new NAACP officers will be installed.

On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, freeing slaves from bondage. The modern-day celebration, called Jubilee Day, pays tribute to that historic day.

The public is invited to attend this special event.
