Downtown bank robbed;  search continues for suspect

South Boston News
SoVaNow.com / July 22, 2013

Police are searching for a lone suspect who robbed the downtown South Boston branch of Carter Bank & Trust late Saturday morning.

The robber is described by police as an African-American male, between 5’7” and 5’10” and weighing around 150 pounds, with a short afro hair style. He was was said to be wearing jean shorts, a black shirt and sunglasses. Police surmised that the suspect may be in his mid-30s.

The man entered the bank shortly after 11:00 a.m. and presented a note to a teller demanding money. He made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, exiting the rear of the bank building into the parking lot before running around the block to Arch Street, towards Broad, said South Boston Police Captain B.K. Lovelace.

The man did not produce a weapon in the course of the robbery, Lovelace said.

Lovelace said “a couple of witnesses” at a Boys & Girls Club fundraiser at Constitution Square spotted the robber running out the back of the bank building and saw him turn right onto Arch Street. A Halifax County Sheriff’s Office K-9 tracking dog picked up the man’s trail at Arch Street but lost the scent from there.

South Boston Police and Sheriff’s deputies are continuing their search for the culprit, and Lovelace said efforts are currently underway to obtain bank camera images to disseminate to the public. The FBI also will become involved as the lead agency for investigating bank robberies.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the South Boston Police Department at (434) 572-4273 or the Halifax County Crime Line at 434-476-8445.

The lobby of Carter Bank & Trust was closed after the robbery, although the drive-through remained in operation. Luella Hubbard, a Carter operations executive, said the bank would be fully reopened on Monday. “We’re okay here. That’s the main thing,” she said.

Carter Bank & Trust is the second bank in the area to be robbed in less than a month. On June 27, the Bank of America branch in the town of Clarksville was held up at gunpoint by two black males who fled the scene in a black pickup truck. One of the two suspects in that incident was described in generally similar terms as the South Boston robber, although there are key differences in the way the robberies were carried out, police have noted.
