The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) welcomed two new members to the Board of Trustees. Joining the Board this month are Delegates James Edmunds and Donald Merricks.

Edmunds represents the 60th District in the Virginia House of Delegates. The 60th District includes the counties of Charlotte, Halifax, Nottoway (part) and Prince Edward. Edmunds is a life-long resident of Halifax County and has served on the Board of Supervisors, where he served as vice chairman, as well as a member of the Virginia Board of Forestry. Edmunds has been recognized for his conservation efforts by the National Wild Turkey Federation, Remington Firearms Company, the Halifax County Soil and Water Board, and the Virginia Chapter of the Wildlife Society. As part of his efforts to improve the quality of life in Halifax County, Edmunds sat on the founding board of the Halifax Education Foundation and donated 100 acres of his family’s land to Halifax County to develop Edmunds Park. Edmunds is a graduate of Halifax County High School and he received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Averett University.

Joining Edmunds on the board is Merricks representing the 16th District in the Virginia House of Delegates. The 16th District represents the counties of Henry (part), Pittsylvania (part), and the City of Martinsville (part). Merricks was born and raised in the Mount Hermon community of Pittsylvania County. He attended Tunstall High School and earned degrees from Danville Community College and Averett University. In 1991 he received his MBA from Averett and he also completed the School for Bank Administration through the University of Wisconsin. Merricks spent 25 years in banking, first with Schoolfield Bank and Trust Company and then First Virginia Bank-Piedmont. Since 1997, Merricks and his wife have owned and operated J.W. Squire Company, Inc., a building specialties company in Danville. Merricks currently serves on the boards of the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, the Educational Foundation Board of Danville Community College, and the New College Institute in Martinsville.

Also present at the June 2 Board of Trustees meeting was Dr. Ken Perkins. Perkins has been named interim vice president for academic affairs at Longwood University and serves as the designee of the Longwood University president to the SVHEC Board of Trustees.

The SVHEC also welcomes two House of Delegates members who have been designated as alternates to the SVHEC Board. They are James M. Shuler and James W. Morefield.
