Eight decades of care for gentlewomen

South Boston News

Hugh Edmunds, center, a Halifax County native who now is a Richmond officer of the Chastain Home for Gentlewomen Foundation, spoke to the guests at Wednesday’s annual memorial service at the Chastain Home in Halifax. The event honors the memories of Mary T. Chastain, Howell Chastain, Elizabeth Archer Chastain and James B. Chastain. The stately Mountain Road home accepted its first occupant in 1947. It is now filled to capacity with seven residents. (SOMcL photo)
