Ahead of National Ice Cream Day and in celebration of National Ice Cream Month, Jennifer Diamond Garrett and Malyka Walton teamed up with Devin Crisman of The Cottage Barn to bring ice cream treats to children living in the Chase City area.

The trio started out at 2 p.m. at the Food Lion store in Chase City and wrapped up at 5:30 p.m. on Virginia Avenue.

The ice cream giveaway was part of the Summer Kids events put on by the Mecklenburg County YMCA.

Garrett said they were able to hand out ice cream to around 40 kids.

The official date for National Ice Cream Day this year was Sunday, July 19. The day became an official food holiday in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan declared the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day and the month of July as National Ice Cream Month.

According to a National Ice Cream Day survey from 2019, nearly one third of those questioned said they would eat ice cream with every meal if they could.
