Farmers market hosts grand opening

SoVaNow.com / June 13, 2019
The public is invited to a grand opening celebration Saturday, at the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market.

Come enjoy refreshments, music, and as always, lots of home grown and homemade goodies from people you know and trust. The market will be open beginning at 7 a.m. until farmers and vendors sell out of vegetable plants, flowers, pork, eggs, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, corn, cabbage, broccoli, beets, string beans, onions, potatoes, baked goods, jams and jellies, crafts, jewelry and more!

Activities for the day include 10-11 a.m. live music by The Blue Grass Five and door prize drawings. Virginia Cooperative Extension Family Nutrition will offer a cooking demonstration using produce bought on-site at the market that morning, and coffee, lemonade and bottled water will be available.

The ice cream truck will available from 11:30-noon.

The Power of Produce, sponsored by the Healthy Harvest Community Garden, will be available for youth 18 years and younger. Eat two bites of the Vegetable of the Week and get $5 to spend at the market.

Virginia Cooperative Extension will be on hand all morning with the Master Gardeners help desk. The South Boston Fire Department will be on hand to show a fire truck up-close as well as give kids a chance to visit with firefighters and give some fire safety tips.

They will have fire safety literature for adults and giveaways for the kids. The Halifax County-South Boston Library will have an information booth as well.

The Farmers Market is located at 300 Broad Street in the parking lot behind Distinct Impressions and across from True Value.
