Fourth of July festivities come with fireworks

SoVaNow.com / June 21, 2018
Independence Day is a time for people wrap themselves in red, white and blue and honor the nation. For downtown South Boston and Halifax County, the upcoming Independence Day means there’s a patriotic parade and fantastic fireworks in the forecast.

“We hope everyone will make plans to bring family and friends to downtown South Boston on Wednesday, July 4 to celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Destination Downtown South Boston executive director Tamyra Vest. “Festivities will kick-off at 6 p.m. when the parade begins. We have a lot to see and do during the entire event and we are thrilled to have so many great organizations involved and sponsoring our July 4 celebration.”

The Halifax County/South Boston July 4 Parade & Fireworks is being hosted by Destination Downtown South Boston. Independence Day sponsors include Halifax County and the Town of South Boston. The event’s Red, White & Blue Sponsors are Nationwide Insurance – J. Brandon Scearce and Fairfield Inn & Suites South Boston. Fireworks sponsor is Huber Engineered Woods.

Vest also noted that the communications partner for the event is Professional Communications, allowing for event planners and volunteers to stay connected and keep things running smoothly.

Brooks Lyon Funeral Home is a significant parking partner during this year’s event. Premier parking for the July 4 event will be located at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home for $10 per parking space. This parking lot has 52 spaces available and Destination Downtown South Boston will be collecting the parking fees, which will go to DDSB to help pay for the event. Mike Lyon will provide restrooms and a cooler of soft drinks for the premier parking guests.

“Our goal for the parade, which will begin at 6 p.m., is to honor our veterans as well as our active military,” said Vest. “We encourage all veterans to participate in the parade.”

Parade check-in and line-up will take place on Chalmers Street at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Applicants who have signed up to be in the parade should turn onto Chalmers Street and report to the check-in tent to receive their staking spot.

Handicap parking for the parade is available on Wilborn Avenue and at the Fire Support Building located at 801 Wilborn Avenue in South Boston.

Admission is free to festivities after the parade and will take place in Constitution Square. Activities will include live entertainment, food vendors, bounce houses, face painting, Marlo the Magician, glow-in-the-dark items for sale and, of course, fireworks.

Food vendors for the event include:
