Fugitive’s vehicle found at Mecklenburg-Brunswick line; ROBERTS ARRESTED (UPDATE)

South Boston News
Roberts / August 10, 2017
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office reported late Friday afternoon that William Jason Roberts has been arrested without incident.

The Sheriff's Office provided the information on Roberts' capture on the department's Facebook page, without elaboration.

Roberts, who is wanted for alleged crimes in Colorado, Kansas and Virginia, had returned to the South Hill area where he grew up after a series of incidents that began more than a week ago in Colorado.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Law enforcement authorities now believe that William Jason Roberts, a 34-year-old man with local ties who is wanted by police in Colorado and Kansas, may be somewhere in the South Hill area.

Local authorities located a stolen vehicle that Roberts was believed to be driving at the Mecklenburg/Brunswick County line on Wednesday night. Roberts was nowhere to be seen and is still at large, and police are warning citizens that Roberts should be considered armed and dangerous.

Roberts, a former Marine who is said by his family to suffer from PTSD and brain injuries, is approximately 6-3” and weighs around 200 to 230 pounds. The last time he was spotted by police, in Botetourt County on Aug. 4, he was wearing a black ball cap, tan shorts and a black shirt. He has arm tattoos.

Roberts grew up in South Hill and has family in the area. He has been on the lam since last week after allegedly assaulting a woman in Colorado. Police picked up his trail in Kansas during a traffic stop, but he eluded authorities and is believed to have stolen a vehicle that he used in the getaway.

The next time he was spotted by police was Friday in Allegheny County. Roberts reportedly was driving a stolen vehicle when he led officers on a chase into Botetourt County, where deputies lost his trail.

Roberts’ last known address is 237 Pack Road, South Hill, although he has also lived in the past in Brodnax and Buffalo Junction, according to court records. Roberts, who is said by authorities to have a history of being armed, is currently facing a felony charge in Halifax County for possession of a sawed-off shotgun. He has had several scrapes with the law in Mecklenburg County and currently has a capias against him for violation of a suspended sentence from 2016.

Anyone seeing a man matching Roberts' description is urged to call 911 or local police.

This story will be updated.
