Halifax County pair charged with heroin trafficking / September 18, 2017
Two Halifax County suspects were arrested Thursday on charges of heroin trafficking as part of a regional operation to stem the flow of drugs from the suspected source city of Henderson, N.C.

On Sept. 14, members of Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotic and Gang Task Force and Southside Virginia Drug Task Force conducted a joint operation along Route 15-S near Clarksville along the route to Henderson, N.C.

Virginia State Trooper Robb Abbott initiated a traffic stop for a moving violation. The suspect vehicle was occupied by Ryan Harris of River Road, South Boston and Tara Barnett of White Oak Drive.

Joining the operation, Senior Trooper Steve Homiak deployed his narcotic canine and received a positive alert to the presence of the odor of narcotics. The suspect vehicle was subsequently searched which led to the arrest of Harris for distribution of heroin and possession of cocaine.

Barnett was also charged with distribution of heroin. Both subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Halifax Adult Detention Center and taken before a magistrate.

Harris was held on a $2,500 secured bond and Barnett on a $1,000 secured bond.

Henderson is believed to have become a source city for individuals from multiple jurisdictions to travel to and obtain heroin. Surveillance had been conducted by Task Force members to observe suspected users/distributors and their vehicles to monitor their movements, according to a Task Force representative.
