Halifax man charged in B&E at Hagood Highway / March 29, 2018

A Halifax man was arrested Wednesday after police found the suspect intoxicated inside a home where a break-in was reported in progress.

Diante Womack, 22, of Halifax was arrested on charges of burglary, vandalism and assault on a law enforcement officer around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. He is being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail under no bond.

Womack’s arrest comes after a resident called the Sheriff’s Office to report a breaking and entering in progress at a home on J.D. Hagood Highway. The caller told officers that someone had been knocking on the door repeatedly and then gained entry into the home through a side window.

When deputies and a Halifax Town police officer arrived at the home, they found an intoxicated male subject sitting on a sofa inside the home. The subject told officers that his vehicle had broken down and he needed somewhere to stay.

Officers then found his vehicle on the side of James D. Hagood Highway very near the residence.

Deputy C.G. Martin arrested the man on the scene.
