Halifax Regional observes National Donate Life Month

SoVaNow.com / April 07, 2014

On average, 150 people are added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting list each day – that’s one every 10 minutes. The response to that need is organ donation, and more than 28,000 patients begin new lives each year thanks to organ transplants.

April is National Donate Life Month and Donate Life America is urging Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those people who have saved lives through the gift of donation. As of June 2013, more than 112 million people, approximately 46 percent of the United States adult population, are registered as organ, eye and tissue donors.

On April 7, Halifax Regional Hospital (HRH) is participating in a donor drive as part of National Donate Life Month. Kia Potts, community education coordinator for LifeNet Health will be on hand to talk with employees and visitors about the facts and myths of organ donation. Potts will be set up a table near the entrance to the Bellwood Café, and in addition to providing important information she will also be able to register individuals as organ donors.

Organ, eye and tissue donation is the process of recovering organs, eyes and tissues from a deceased person and transplanting them into others in order to save the lives or improve the health of those in need. Up to nine lives can be saved through organ donation, and another 50 lives or more can be improved through tissue donation, according to Donate Life Virginia.

HRH has an average of 250 referrals for donation per year, which is a combination of eye, tissue and organ referrals. In 2013, HRH had five tissue donors. HRH had six tissue donors and three organ donors in 2012.
