Halifax to hold budget hearing

SoVaNow.com / May 10, 2010
Halifax Town Council will host a public hearing Tuesday beginning at 7:30 p.m. on the Town’s advertised proposed FY 2010-11 budget which totals $880,294. The hearing will take place at Town Hall during the regular monthly meeting of Council.

The budget is based on a real state tax rate of 17.5 cents per $100 value, which is a slight decrease from the current year’s rate of 18 cents per $100. The personal property tax rate is $1.68 per $100 value with the lodging tax set at three and a half cents and the meals tax rate at an even three percent.

Earlier in their Tuesday meeting Council is expected to approve a recommendation from the Town Planners to allow for the operation of golf carts on certain roads in the town following a public comment period on the issue.

In other business Councilmen are expected to authorize a response be made to the Roanoke River Basin Bi-State Commission suggesting that the state opt to buy a portion of the water storage at Kerr Lake Reservoir which is now controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. County Supervisors last week also authorized County Administrator George Nester to express their support for the measure.

Council is also expected to write off some $1,800 in uncollectible personal property taxes and set a public hearing for its June meeting on a public hearing for the Virginia Department of Transportation of safety improvements on Route 501/VA Scenic Byway.
