Herndon embarks on travel with W&M
SoVaNow.com / June 06, 2013Halifax County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Merle Herndon will be traveling to Australia and New Zealand this summer as a member of a study group from the College of William & Mary. The trip is being financed by the college, and Herndon will use her vacation time to travel.
Asked about her plans yesterday, Herndon said this “is something I have always wanted to do. I consider it the opportunity of a lifetime. I’m excited about our study group’s going into the schools and colleges there since New Zealand seems to have undertaken a lot of research into visual learning. I hope to bring back a lot of good ideas from this trip.”
School Board Chairman Kim Farson stressed that not one cent of the expense is being borne by the local school system: “Dr. Herndon is spending her agreed-upon vacation time in making this trip, and we have absolutely nothing to do with how she wants to spend her vacation.”
Farson said school trustees had been advised of the superintendent’s plans to take the study group’s offer to join them many months ago.
CommentsMaybe she'll decide to stay.

CommentsJust curious as to why in reporting you did not provide the formal name of the William and Mary College program through which our Halifax County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Merle Herndon is participating. And you write, "The trip is being financed by the college..." Did our Superintendent of Schools compete to receive a particular grant in order to participate?
