Horse perishes in morning collision on U.S. 58 / April 09, 2018
A horse was killed Thursday morning on US 58 after it strayed into the right lane of the highway and was struck by an approaching vehicle.

According to Virginia State Police, Michael Wayne Mudd, 32, of South Boston was traveling west on US 58 Thursday when the 2015 Chevrolet van he was driving struck the horse, which died from the collision. The accident took place at 6:20 a.m., about a half mile west of State Route 708.

The animal was in the right lane of the roadway and caused the van to veer off the right side, where it hit a guardrail and overturned.

Mudd suffered minor injuries but did not require transport for hospital treatment. Damages to the van were estimated at $7,000.

Virginia State Trooper W. R. Wooding investigated the accident.
