Howell takes Mecklenburg County Teacher of the Year honor

Teachers from each of the eight schools in Mecklenburg County were chosen by their peers for the honor of becoming teacher of the year. From the eight, one is named MCPS Teacher of the Year.

This year, that honor went to Michelle “Shelley” Howell, a special education teacher at La Crosse Elementary School. She was chosen because of her passion for teaching students with special needs as well as her commitment to school, civic and extra-curricular activities and her work “to creates a school culture of leadership,” according to the nomination on her behalf.

The other seven teachers who along with Howell were recognized at Monday night’s meeting of the Mecklenburg County School Board were: Cathy Cochelin - Park View High, Justin Kirkland - Bluestone High, Gina Thomasson - Bluestone Middle, Amanda Poos - South Hill Elementary, Karen Burton - Chase City Elementary, Joanna Pittard - Clarksville Elementary and Tara Dunbar - Park View Middle.
