The newly appointed principal at South Hill Elementary School is no stranger to the students there. Michele Icenhour, who was officially appointed during Monday night’s meeting of the Mecklenburg County School Board, has been the assistant principal at South Hill Elementary for the past four years.

She is replacing Joan Covington Hite, who last month was named director of curriculum assessment and data analysis for Mecklenburg County Public Schools. Hite assumes her new duties effective July 1.

Hite, who has served as Icenhour’s boss for the past four years, said, “I am excited that she is taking over. It will lead to consistency here in the building. The transition will be smooth because we have worked together for four years. She will be a great asset to the school.”

“I am very thankful for the opportunity to serve as the principal at South Hill Elementary School for the upcoming school year. I am looking forward to continuing to assist our teachers as we serve our students and community,” Icenhour said.

Icenhour has been an educator for 13 years — seven years teaching in both Vance County, N.C. and Mecklenburg County schools, followed by six years in administration. Before becoming the assistant principal at South Hill Elementary School in 2011, Icenhour served as the administrator for Park View Middle School and Park View High School.

Her undergraduate degree is from Averett University and she holds a Masters in Education degree from University of Virginia and a Masters in School Administration from N.C. State, in Raleigh.

“South Hill Elementary School is a great school with many wonderful staff members, students, parents and excellent community support and I am excited about working with all of these stakeholders as we strive to continue our successes,” she said.
