Jobs initiative offers payroll subsidies for new trainees

Job numbers may be stagnant, but there are opportunities for companies and job seekers to come together for the right fit. The South Central Workforce Investment Board provides four Workforce Centers located in South Boston, South Hill, Charlotte Court House, and Farmville as the convenient resource for the area they serve.

Employers who are looking to hire may want to look into the opportunities provided at the centers. For example, the Workforce Centers offer an On-The-Job-Training program which can reimburse up to 90 percent of the wages for a new hire for a specific amount of time.

The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 provides the funding for this and other job-related programs.

“This has to be applied for before the hire is made,” said SCWIB Executive Director Debra Crowder. “The person hired must be eligible.”

Crowder explained that job seekers who are eligible are persons who may have exhausted their unemployment benefits or those whose benefits are about to be exhausted. There are other eligibility categories that an employer should discuss with a Workforce Investment Act case manager.

The reimbursement for employers is one way to encourage hiring employees with transferable skills, training the new hire for the tasks needed, and retaining the individual once the training is successfully completed. This also provides the new employee with an opportunity to learn.

“We want to get a good fit to fit their [employers] needs. It’s an employer service that we would be glad to help with, and it helps job seekers too, as it gets them employed. It’s a win-win,” Crowder said.

For job seekers who enter the OJT program, he or she will learn new skills and also receive the necessary training to meet, and possibly exceed, the expectations outlined in the position.

The Workforce Centers also provide other programs for those looking for employment that may even assist in back-to-school training.

Whether a job seeker or an employer, the WIA case manager can assist both in getting connected with the right people.
