Lakefest now set Sept. 18-19 / July 01, 2020

The Clarksville Lake Country Chamber of Commerce announced Thursday that the Virginia Lake Festival, Southside Virginia’s largest summertime event, will be postponed to Sept. 18-19.

Lakefest 2020 had been set to take place July 17-19.

Lakefest is a staple of summer for residents and visitors to Buggs Island Lake, often drawing crowds estimated at 50,000 or more. Yet even before the Chamber’s decision to delay Lakefest, organizers had planned to curtail some of the familiar aspects of Lakefest Week, such as the Thursday night children’s rides in tethered hot-air balloons at the town business park.

“It is with a heavy heart that the Chamber Board of Directors have all agreed that it is in the best interest of our community that we postpone the 43rd Annual Virginia Lake Festival to Sept. 18 and 19,” wrote Lake Country Chamber Director Sheila Cuykendall in an announcement Thursday. “Phase three starts July 1st and looking over the restrictions that the governor has cited limits the event beyond our control. We hung as long as we could hoping for the best, but we feel its best to reschedule to September where there may be less limitations.

“We know Lakefest is a huge economy booster for our community and this is why the decision was so hard to make. We hope everyone will understand and join us in September. It will be a grand event as we share the weekend with Lake Life Live” – Clarksville’s beach music concert series — “and their rescheduled Embers concert which is being held on September 20th. Thank you for your understanding and support,” Cuykendall wrote.

While the festival is delayed, “We have ordered Lakefest T-shirts and hope to have them available in a few weeks,” Cuykendall said. T-shirts will be available for purchase at the Clarksville Chamber office on Second Street or at Virginia Avenue Mall.
