Local rapper, writer killed by hit-and-run driver Monday
SoVaNow.com / May 10, 2012A Halifax native is dead, and Richmond police are searching for the hit-and-run driver who killed him.
Delvin Maurice “D.I.P.” Edmonds, 34, who grew up in Halifax County, was riding his motorcycle with a friend on Monday afternoon when his bike was struck by a motorist. The friend’s leg was broken.
Edmonds was a musician who wrote and recorded music with Grandmaster Slice, also known as local businessman Stacey Rogers (of “Electric Slide” rap version fame). Edmonds’ best-known song was “Wind Up Your Bottom,” which enjoyed regional radio and club play.
Rogers, whose hit came in 1989, began recording Edmonds in 1996 — the pair had worked together at Prime Time Rentals — and said Edmonds’ style blended Jamaican chanting with the go-go music popular on the Washington, D.C., music scene.
Rogers had Edmonds tour with him, performing in the Carolinas, Ohio and Indiana.
“His energy on stage was incredible,” recalled Rogers.
At some point, Edmunds moved to Richmond but still stayed in touch.
“He always had a ‘real job,’” said Rogers. But music was “his passion.” Regardless of whether he could make money at it, he felt, “God had given him a talent.”
Rogers described Edmonds as “a good-hearted person; nobody would say anything bad about him.”
Edmonds has also written two inspirational books; one is “Wise Words: The Other Side of Your Breakthrough,” which was published earlier this year.
Richmond Police said both motorcyclists were thrown from their bikes after being struck by a Toyota Camry, which left the scene. Police are searching for the driver.
Edmonds was the son of James Paul and Wanda Coleman Edmonds of South Boston; he was married to Carla Austina Edmonds and leaves two sons. (See obituaries, page 3, for funeral information.)
